The Supreme Court has put a halt to the Karnataka High Court's decision allowing the government to proceed with releasing the board examination results for Classes 5, 8, 9, and 11. This stay order was issued by Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal.
The court stated, "The operation of the impugned order shall remain stayed till further orders," while also issuing notice on the plea.
In March, a division bench of the Karnataka High Court had permitted the state government to conduct board exams for Classes 5, 8, and 9 under the state syllabus, overturning a single bench order that had canceled the government's decision to hold examinations. The High Court instructed the state government to resume the examination process from where it had left off.
However, the Registered Unaided Private Schools Association (RUPSA) took the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging the division bench's decision of the High Court.
The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) had implemented a 'centralized annual examination' for Classes 5 and 8 in the previous academic year, while the government introduced the same for Class 9 and first Pre-University Course (PUC) through a notification in September 2023. According to the notification, students who fail will not be held back.
In such cases, only the student and their parents will be informed about the results by the school. However, for the first PUC examination, the board will conduct a supplementary examination at the college level for students who fail to achieve a passing grade.
