The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made some important updates to its rules, now requiring all schools in India to use NCERT textbooks. These changes are outlined in the 2018 Affiliation Bye-Laws (Chapter 2, Clause 2.4.7). The goal is to make sure all students learn the same material and to remove anything that might be offensive.

Guidelines for Classes I to VIII

The new rules, announced by CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta, are in effect right away. Schools must use NCERT or SCERT textbooks for students in Classes I to VIII. If schools want to add other materials, these must follow the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) guidelines. These extra materials should be easy to understand and include practical exercises.

This approach ensures that students not only learn the theory but also see how to use it in real life. By sticking to the national curriculum, CBSE guarantees that students across the country get a consistent education.

NCERT Books Are a Must for Classes IX to XII

For students in Classes IX to XII, schools must use NCERT textbooks as specified by CBSE. If NCERT or SCERT books aren’t available for certain subjects, schools should use CBSE-approved books from the Board’s website.

Schools can also include extra materials and digital content, but these need to match NCF guidelines. Digital tools are encouraged to make learning more engaging.

Be Careful with Content

The new rules emphasize the importance of careful content selection. Schools must ensure that any additional materials, digital content, or books from private publishers do not contain anything offensive to any group. This aligns with CBSE’s commitment to creating a respectful and inclusive learning environment.

Clear and Responsible

CBSE requires schools to list all required books on their websites. This list must include a signed statement from the Manager and Principal, confirming they’ve reviewed the books and are responsible for their content. If a school is found using books with offensive material, CBSE will take appropriate action.
