The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a strict policy requiring a minimum of 75% attendance for students appearing in the 2025 board exams for classes 10 and 12. This rule is intended to ensure that students actively participate in their academic learning and are well-prepared for the upcoming examinations. Below are the key details, reasons, and implications of this mandatory attendance requirement.

Why 75% Attendance is Important for CBSE Exams

CBSE’s mandate highlights the importance of regular classroom attendance in fostering consistent learning and preparation. The 75% attendance rule is part of Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE examination bye-laws, which stress that students must meet this threshold to qualify for their board exams. The policy encourages students to engage in classroom learning, where they can gain better conceptual clarity and actively participate in discussions.

Exceptions to the Attendance Rule

CBSE understands that certain circumstances may hinder a student’s ability to meet the 75% attendance requirement. As a result, exceptions are allowed in cases like:

  • Medical Emergencies: Students facing health issues can apply for attendance relaxation if they provide valid medical documentation.
  • National or International Events: Participation in recognized sports or extracurricular events allows students to request relaxation with proof of participation.

For students eligible under these criteria, CBSE may grant a relaxation of up to 25%, bringing their required attendance down to 50%. Schools must follow the guidelines and submit valid documentation for students seeking such exemptions.

School Responsibilities and Consequences of Non-Compliance

CBSE has directed schools to inform students and parents about this mandatory attendance rule and its consequences. Schools are required to maintain accurate attendance records and report any students falling short of the required percentage. To ensure compliance, CBSE may conduct surprise inspections to verify the attendance records of students.

Consequences of Non-Compliance:

  • For Students: Students who do not meet the attendance criteria, without valid exemptions, risk being barred from the board exams.
  • For Schools: Schools that fail to maintain proper attendance records or allow absent students to appear for exams without valid documentation could face strict actions, including the possibility of disaffiliation.

Key Dates and Record Submission

Attendance for board exam eligibility will be calculated up to January 1 of the academic year. After this date, schools will not be allowed to revise attendance records. To help schools manage attendance efficiently, CBSE has provided Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a submission pro forma for cases that may require special consideration.

Conclusion

The 75% attendance requirement emphasizes CBSE’s commitment to fostering academic discipline and thorough preparation for board exams. This rule ensures that students remain engaged and schools uphold the quality of education. Students and parents are advised to take this requirement seriously, as failing to meet it could result in significant consequences.
